According to a very optimistic scenario, elections in Ukraine could be held as soon as four months after the lifting of martial law as the necessary legal changes and organising works would take 4 to 6 months. If everything goes smoothly…
Elections are currently prohibited by law while the country is at war. Therefore, to hold elections in the spring or at any other time, either the legislation must be changed or martial law must be lifted.
Most probably, the time when Ukraine can actually hold elections again, or more precisely, when elections can take place following a peace agreement, is really not that far away. This is indicated by the fact that, according to some reports, the ruling Servant of the People party is ready to update its brand and list in the hope of a future victory, even at the cost of repackaging the ‘Servant of the People’ brand into the brand ‘Team Zelenskyy’ and, getting rid of the problematic individuals.
According to many, including Zelenskyy’s party members, the ruling party is probably in the most difficult position among other future election participants. The Office of the President sees a certain way out of the situation in the rebranding of their party and updating the lists.
If we look at the situation realistically, rebranding alone is unlikely to lead to victory. According to some assessments, the current leaders of the Servants, such as head of faction David Arakhamia, will be asked to leave, and all the negativity will be taken with them.
As for Arakhamia, his name is not accidentally mentioned in this context.
An investigation by Hromadske, published in late November revealed that the deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council from the Opposition Platform for Life Vladyslav Kaskiv is trying to take away land from local entrepreneurs in the village of Pylypets in Transcarpathia for the construction of a ski resort. Investigators found out that 12 companies associated with the deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Kaskiv owned 450 hectares of land on which the construction of the Borzhava ski resort was planned at the end of 2021.
It should be noted that in 2020, the Office of President Zelensky, headed by Andriy Yermak, was especially interested in the latter. One of Kaskiv’s implicit partners, Austrian Gernot Leitner, even went to present the project of the resort on Bankova Street.
The investigation also found that the head of the Servant of the People faction, David Arakhamia, came to the abovementioned village in early October. When asked by journalists about what he and Kaskiv did in Transcarpathia, Arakhamia said that he was engaged in attracting investments and looked at the project of the Borzhava ski resort.
As frustrating as it is, the fact that Ukrainian politicians, financially strengthened during the years of war, are preparing for new large-scale ’investments’ – a synonyme for theft – in Western Ukraine suggests that peace will indeed about to come to the country.
Whether the desired peaceful Ukraine will be a new, corruption-free country remains an open question, but given the above story, it is better not to have any illusions.
