Ukraine is ready for negotiations with Russia and supports China’s position on Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry press service said in a statement on 24 July.
It is also emphasised in the statement that Mr Kuleba said that Ukraine and China are strategic and important economic and trade partners, and that he ’supports China’s position on the Taiwan issue and will adhere to the principle of united China.’
The Ukrainian side ’highly values the positive and constructive role played by China in promoting peace and maintaining the international order’, ’attaches great importance to the views of the Chinese side’ and carefully studied the six-point Consensus of China and Brazil on political settlement Russian war against Ukraine, Chinese officials noted after the meeting.
In his evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that China will no longer send weapons to Russia, adding that ’There are strong indications that China supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.’
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in China between 23 and 25 July. Kuleba’s visit came to light on 22 July when Ukraine’s MFA shared some details on it in a statement, including the fact that the main topic of discussion will be the finding of ways to stop Russian aggression and China’s possible role in achieving a sustainable and just peace.
’It is important that China hear directly from Ukraine about the toll that Ukraine has suffered through Russia’s war of aggression’, Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the US Department of State commented on Kuleba’s visit to China, without saying a single word about Ukraine’s statements concerning Taiwan.
With regard to China it should be noted that the country was called a ’decisive factor’ contributing to Russia’s war against Ukraine in the final declaration after the NATO summit in Washington in July.
As can be seen from the above, Beijing has entered the Ukrainian peace process by putting its own interests first: China persuaded Kyiv to first of all declare that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. Note that the focus is on Ukraine, which main supporter, the United States, is highly sensitive to Taiwan’s issue… All this is also very interesting in light of the fact that not only the US but also the EU, which has launched accession negotiations with Ukraine recently, is determined to distance itself from China. In Beijing, it has once again turned out what loyalty to allies means to the leadership of Ukraine.
