EU Peace Plan undermines direct high-level talks between the US and Russia

The European peace plan for Ukraine initiated by Finland will consist of 12 points built around two phases: ceasefire and negotiations, according to media sources.

This is not a finalized peace agreement but a draft peace plan. It has not been discussed at the highest level of the EU and has not been officially approved by any country.

The ’ceasefire first’ approach is what most European countries have insisted on since US President Donald Trump’s administration began talks with the Kremlin.

The plan envisions a complete ceasefire along the front line and further negotiations over the occupied territories. The plan also suggests the creation of a Board of Peace chaired by US President Donald Trump to oversee the implementation of the final peace agreement – an idea apparently inspired by the peace proposal for Gaza. According to the plan, Ukraine would receive security guarantees, funding for reconstruction, and an accelerated path toward EU membership.

However it still remains unclear whether the initiative has official support in Washington.

’For Trump, ending this war truly remains a priority’, head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said in an interview adding that, he believes, Ukraine deserves only a stable and just peace. In Washington, it became clear that Moscow is still not ready for any real concessions or serious peace talks. Therefore, Trump canceled the Budapest meeting, Mr Yermak explained. He also noted that the visions of President Trump and President Zelenskyy that Ukraine needs a ceasefire along the current front line, coincide entirely.

It should be noted that, in this interview, Yermak did not mention the EU and the European peace plan for Ukraine. When talking about partners, he was referring only to the US. Apparently, the EU is not on his horizon at all.

Based on this, we can conlude that the new EU ’peace plan’ is just a communication trick. It is just another marketing tool aimed at presenting the EU as a serious power capable of ending the war in Ukraine.

However, as is clear from Yermak’s words, no one is interested in this draft peace plan, including Ukraine.

With this in mind, European leaders had better take a back seat and hope that the planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Budapest actually takes place.

That is the best way to help Ukraine and promote peace.
