While US President Donald Trump still believes he can end the war in Ukraine, top EU and NATO officials, as well as some European leaders claim that ’Europe is not at war, but not at peace either.’ Among those who have recently used this phrase in their speeches and interviews are NATO chief Mark Rutte, European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In addition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the continent is facing a new and dangerous phase of hybrid warfare Russia is waging against Europe.
’Europe is under threat’, top EU officials state. But is this really the case? Isn’t it actually an attempt to strengthen the European defence industry? On the other hand, isn’t it a ’traditional’ hatred of Russia among the Baltic people and in Poland…?
In his speech at the Plenary Debate of the European Parliament on the United Response to Recent Russian Airspace Violations, EU Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius (Lithuania) mentioned that Europe will most likely face more provocations, disruptions and sabotage in the future. He called Russia’s provocations reckless, irresponsible and dangerous, which pose a threat to the people and peace of Europe. Commissioner
Interestingly, almost simultaneously with Kubilius’ speech in the European Parliament, Polish PM Donald Tusk said that extraditing the Ukrainian suspect for his alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions is not in his country’s interest.
In this case, the hypocrisy and double standards, so much typical of the EU have become apparent…
Concluding his speech which was predominantly devoted to the issue of Ukraine, Kubilius said that until 2030, the EU shall have the possibility to spend 2.5 trillion euros for different defence needs.
With such a conclusion, Mr Kubilius’ mask has fallen for good: it is obvious that he needs to claim that Europe is not at peace because the prime players in the EU’s defence industry (from Germany and France) are determined to sign deals worth trillions of euros. Promoting the issue of Ukraine and war-mongering in Europe serves only one purpose, namely to secure enormous profits for European defence companies such as the German Rheinmetall and the French Thales Group.
In this context, it is also worth mentioning that former German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently stated that in 2021, she, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, intended to organize negotiations between the EU and Vladimir Putin. However, at that time, the Baltic countries and Poland were reportedly against this. ’In any case, it didn’t happen. Then I left office, and that’s when Putin’s aggression began,’ Merkel said.
’Merkel represents a long-standing tradition of appeasing Putin, thanks to which Russian tanks are now present in both Georgia and Ukraine. And if this line continues today, I fear they (Russian tanks) would be somewhere on the road to Berlin and on our territory. (…) I think she is now trying to raise a wave of these Russia-lovers, the admirers of Putin, against Merz.’, Lithuanian conservative politician Zygimantas Pavilionis reacted to Merkel’s words.
’Europe worries it’s already at war – and America hasn’t noticed’, CNN says in an article on the topic of ’between peace and war’, offering a critical assessment of Trump’s actions.
However, the truth may lie elsewhere.
Perhaps, the US has not noticed a threat of a war to Europe because, contrary to the allegations of some European leaders, it simply does not actually exist…?
